Fresh Start™ | Giving Women the Means to Make Vital Decisions

It takes a woman on average five attempts before she is able to leave an abusive relationship for good.

Understanding the cycle of domestic violence, being emotionally prepared, and planning for safety are the first steps. It is then essential to build a supportive environment and to map out next steps to achieve economic independence to successfully start a new life, free of violence.

Fresh Start™, just published by YWCA Canada, is a booklet that provides both the emotional support and practical advice women need to assess their situations and their options.

Fresh Start™ details the dynamics and likely consequences of domestic violence, and talks about the emotional contradictions women often experience. The booklet also provides step-by-step information on how women can build a safety plan for themselves and their children.

Fresh Start™ also provides an overview of the Criminal Code, child protection laws and access & custody legislation, and explains in simple terms police procedures, legal options and proceedings.

Finally, Fresh Start™ provides women with a basic understanding of resources and supports they should seek out to gain economic independence once they make their journey towards a life free of violence.

To ensure Fresh Start™ offers the best guidance and applies across Canada, the book was reviewd by YWCA shelter managers from various regions, a Family Law and an Immigration lawyer, Children's Aid Society and Police Services. To order a copy, contact YWCA Canada at 416-962-8881 or order online.
